    Post Shim steel beam

In the crawl space of my house I have 2 masonry piers with a steel plate, in good condition, that are suppose to be supporting the steel beam above. There is a very small space that you can see light through. What type of shim should be used? There is no damage, so we want to get this before any happens.

I had a similar problem once where I needed shims that I could custom size/fit that would not compress when the load was placed on them. I went to an industrial plastics supplier and bought scrap pieces of resin panels. Worked like a charm.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
