    Default dimmer switch

    Hello there,

My dimmer switch has 2 black wires and 1 green wire. Can I use
any black wire as hot wire?
    thanks

Yes, A switch interrupts the hot.

    Hot in, hot out.

Actually it depends on what you want to use it for, because one is hot all the time (in) and the other is hot only when the switch is in "on" position (out).

I will use a dimmer switch for a light fixture. So if I understand , any black wire on dimmer switch that I connect to
the hot wire will make the switch work?
    thanks

depends on the type of dimmer switch you have. if its an up and down switch with the little slide bar next to it...on the right side there are two screws, the bottom one is for the power coming in and the top is for the wire to the light, green is the ground......if its a round push knob with two wires instead of screws then either can be for the power coming in and either can go to the light, green is the ground.

If the dimmer has two black wires and no other indication that there is a difference, then simply connect it as you would a normal light switch. (The green is ground.)

As for the other wires in the box, not just any is hot. One of the black wires in the box may go to the light.

If there is only a single black wire and a single white wire in the box, one of those is hot and one is the "load" wire to the light. It doesn't matter which dimmer wire connects to which box wire.
