    Cool Refinishing Bamboo Floor

I'm looking for advice on refinishing bamboo floors. My blond-colored bamboo floor, in an open loft space (in an old New England mill building), has pet stains between some of the boards, and I would like to sand the floor and refinish it in a darker color, maybe something like maple. The floors were affixed to a concrete base, in case that is relevant. Thank you! ToddA

Generally speaking, bamboo is a dense wood. Let's hope that this characteristic minimized the pet's damage.

In any case, you will need to sand the floor, 3 or 4 times, each time using finer grit paper. It's a messy process and you'll need to clean the dust each time. You'll be removing the top silica layer as well.

Use a brush to apply gel stain, then rub with a rug. Do one area at the time, but do the whole floor on the same day.

For the future, keep in mind that bamboo floor is delicate. I know customers who don't allow street shoes on bamboo, only home shoes with soft soles.

Other than that bamboo is a good choice.

Thank you, dj1: this is precisely what I was looking for--an easy-to-understand, step-by-step set of directions (and, even better, you've made it sound manageable)! ToddA
