    In remodeling, I like to have the door available and ready to install and calculate the rough opening from the intended door. Also, the measurements are in the plans.

    framiner add 2 inches to each dimension; the RO for a 36" door is 38" x 82", for contractor type doors. If you got something special, do only as DJ said and have the door in your hot little hands before making the opening or add removable pieces of framing to accomodate, which is a bit tougher when it comes to trim out.
