Question Remove old chimney section ?

We have an old chimney from a hot water heater (which was moved to the other side of the house) which I would like to cut into to recess a cabinet into the space. The chimney goes from the window level of our english basement (has its own foundation outside that of the house) through the roof above the second floor. I would like to remove the bottom part of the chimney - the first floor section, and leave the rest due to major repair costs for exterior stucco and roof. Is there a safe way to do this?

Not without some major work, chimneys are very heavy and need substantial support.

Thanks for your reply Jack...not even if a steel support of some kind was added?

If properly installed an supported. I would not recommend this as an amateur job.

Like Jack said, it can be done, but not a DIY project.
I'm not even sure I would trust it to be done. In the end removing it would be best solution.
