Default what to do with old cistern under porch

We have a 1930's cottage with a cistern under a porch that was closed in later. Part of the cistern extends beyond the enclosed porch and has concrete top and hand pump. The cistern leaks into the basement. No downspouts feed the cistern and cistern is not used. Can we fill it with brick and gravel? Other suggestions? I fear excavating to collapse it will damage the house.

Check with your local cement plant they should be able to formulate a low PSI pourable fill.
Than all you have to do is estimate the cubic yards required.

Check with your local soil and water department. Most jurisdictions have very strict rules about specific methods and requirements for abandoning cisterns and wells. You don't want to have to dig it up after it is done wrong.
