    Default Move a light switch.

I want to move a light switch from one side of a door to the other side of the door. Since the wires are not long enough to reach the new location, can I just install a junction box to extend the wires, or do I have to run all new cable from it's point of origin?

you can install a junction box but you can't cover it up. if it's a first floor switch you can pull the wire down into the basement, install a junction box there and run the new wires up the other side of the door. if it's a second floor switch you can pull the wires into the attic, install a junction box there and run new wires down the other side of the door. this is all assuming that the wires come from the basement or the attic. if they don't let us know and we'll figure something else out.

If what MLB is suggesting can't be done, turn the existing switch box into a junction box and run your new wires from that point to the new location. When done, just put a cover plate on it.
