    Default Uninsulated crawl space

My mother-in-law lives Virginia Beach, Virginia in a 47 year old ranch style house with a crawl space. We just discovered that the floor is not insulated. Is it worth the effort and cost to insulate it after all these years? Average moisture content is 10% if that comes into the question. Thanks for any comments.

Howdy, First confirm adequate attic insulation as that is where money is better spent. What is the sqft of crawl space? How large are the heating bills? Obtain a bid and then decide.

Virginia Beach, at it's coldest, has an average low in January of 51 degrees so insulating the floor to cold in a crawl space is pointless. Since the average temperature of shaded ground is 52 degrees, insulating it against heat is also pointless. By insulating the crawlspace you'd gain a small degree of warmth in the winter and lose the small extra cool in the summer.

Thanks guys. We've decided not to insulate. It has worked well for 47 years, let's not fix it if it ain't broke!
