I wonder if you have gotten an estimate from a heating contractor for this project, if only to get his/her input on what the job entails------it's a job that can be done on a DIY basis, but a lot of things can go wrong, and some calculations have to be done to get it right.
I agree that the new rads should be positioned under the windows in order to counteract the cold air coming off the glass, & to increase the convective warm air circulation around the room by the rads.
The heat output of the new rads (in BTUs/hour)(british thermal units) has to be calculated to fit the size of the room; in turn, a HEAT LOSS CALCULATION has to be done to measure the square footage of the room, and the amount of heat that is being lost by the room on a cold day, so that the heat output of the new rads is equal to, or slightly greater than the heat being lost per hour during winter weather; perhaps the company where you have bought or intend to buy the new cast iron rads has discussed this with you?
The present piping connections on the old rads may be steel, cast iron, brass, or copper, & may present problems in removal; the boiler has to be turned off, & partially drained so the rads will have no water in them when they are disconnected.
You might also consider the option of perimeter hydronic (hot water) baseboard around the base of the room, which would be more cost effective, or even stainless steel "european style" units----all of these options entail piping disconnects and reconnects, recharging the system water & air removal so the boiler can be restarted & ready for the heating season.
Do the present cast iron rads have SHUT OFF VALVES (often round black knobs) at the bottom side of the rads???
Could you post the square footage of the room, ceiling height, total amount of square feet of glass (windows) in the room, & do you know if there is insulation present in the exterior walls of this room???
Do you and the people who will be assisting you on this project feel capable, & comfortable & have the proper tools for disconnecting & reconnecting/soldering the metal piping connected to the rads???
