    Default Is this bad?

The plaster walls in my house are not in good shape. The walls by my stairs to the second floor are coated in a rough plaster which has been cracking off for a while. Now I'm noticing that the wall buckles out and there's a deep hole through the underlying plaster. How bad is it that this wall is doing it and does it require major structural repair?

    sarat,

It appears that the old lath is separating from the underlying studs. Is it dangerous or structural? I doubt it, but you are going to need the assistance of a talented plasterer to patch it and blend it into the existing plaster. These kind of repairs are common in older plaster homes with wooden lath and plaster. It appears that someone has merely painted over the "scratch" coat of plaster in the past.

    I agree with orDJen,

However this is the perfect time to remove the plaster from that wall, fix all the electrical, plumbing, phone and data lines, and the insulation. When all that is complete, replace with drywall. At least you'll have one wall modernized in your home.
