    Question Suggestions for painting kitchen cabinets?

    I've bought a home built sometime in the 1960's. The kitchen has two sets of cabinets. They have all been varnished an ugly darker color, however, on one side of the kitchen the varnish has been painted over. I would like to repaint all of it, to make it match and brighten up a very small, dark kitchen. I'm clueless as to how to begin. Could someone tell me how best to tackle this project? Will I need to remove or treat the painted and varnished surfaces before I can do anything to it? Money is a bit of an object, otherwise I would just tear them out and start over. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Thanks so much for the suggestion! I really appreciate it! It looks like it will be a big project, but something I think I could do. Let's hope so. Wish me luck!

    That's a good instruction-series!

    Another suggestion...there's some very good "Self-leveling" paints out there, such as Insl-X's Cabinet-Coat, or ACE's Cabinet, Door & Trim paint.
    * These are polyurethane-fortified Latex (Hybrid) paints.
    * The ACE is a 50-state legal low-voc paint.
    * Allow 24hrs between coats for leveling.
    * You only have about 1 MIN. max for brushing!!! Use long/smooth strokes...then get out of it!

    Full cure/hardness takes about a month...
