Default Moving a vanity in a 2nd floor bathroom

The place I'd like to move it is across the room. The floor joists run at a 90 degree angle from the way the pipe would run, Ie the pipe crosses the joists. How do I run the pipe ? Do I cut a notch in the joists and then reinforce them ?

Notching joists is permitted, subject to exclusions specified in your local codes.

Go to your local building dept for the details, so you dont err and compromise the integrity of your joists.

Depending on the size of the joists you can drill them, but it must be in the middle third of the joist.

Let me correct what John said, it should read:

"Depending on the size of the joists you can drill them, EXCEPT in the middle third of the joist".

Still, where you can drill and notch, it has to follow your local code.

I think were both right . Your talking about the middle third of the span. I'm talking about the middle third of the joist it self. Notches are not allowed in any location.
