Default Best way to silicone an already installed sink

I've got a new granite self rimming composite sink installed.

I want to be doubly sure the rim is sealed by applying more silicone around the rim. When I use mineral spirits to clean up I am also cleaning up some of the sealant that should stay on the rim.

What's the best way to apply and/or cleanup the silicone?

1- thoroughly clean and dry the area
2- mask off the rim with blue painters tape, on both sides of the joint
3- apply less silicone than you think
    4- smooth with your finger
5- clean off your finger with one square of terlit paper
6- add more silicone if needed
    7- peel away the tape
8- dampening your finger with denatured alcohol* smooth the joint

    * do not use paint thinner or turpentine. That will 'eat' at the silicone, can too much can easily make the silicone never cure.

The tape made a huge difference in easy cleanup.

    Thanks
