I am currently remodeling the living room / dining area. The ceiling is a cathedral style about 10 feet at the peak and 9 at the sides. there was a free standing closet that defined the linking room dining room areas. the ridge beam in this area is a steel I beam about 32 feet long and 8 inches tall…. when I torn down the closet I found 2 steel columns that went front he steel floor beam up to the ridge beam - they are about 7 feet apart and were in the walls of the free standing closet. as you face them there is a cross of steel I beam between the 2 columns at the top. an engineer friend and I both think that they were put there initially to provide lateral support until the rest of the roof was build. I would like to remove the cross of steel i beam and just leave the 2 columns…. I would like an opinion of whether or not this could cause problems of some sort…. I could send a picture of the site if someone would care to see them…

thanks,
Ed
