What products are available to keep cats and dogs from my roses but yet not harmful to the them?

We use tomato cages. For our veggies, we plant them in 5 gallon buckets with several 1" holes drilled into the bottom

There are also horrible smelling (often organic) sprays one can use. They, generally, keep away all manner of mammals (although some also promise to keep away birds and other creatures), so one would want to check each individual product to make sure that it keeps away only those creatures that you want to.

And some advice i wish i'd had the first time i ever used it: wear, minimally, gloves (latex are my preference) and clothes that you can toss in the washer immediately, in case the wind carries any of it onto you. The stuff truly reeks.
