Post Which adhesive to fix chimney flashing?

I am in the process of running some new wiring and had to remove some old flashing around the chimney in the basement. They used a pinkish adhesive (see below) that was brittle when I took it off. I'll need to replace this when I'm done wiring, but what is that adhesive called or do I use?

The only reason for flashing under the roof / house would be to keep rodents / insects out. Use the expanding foam in a can. Or use screws to hold the sheet metal back up into place.

It was very brittle. Can silicone get brittle?
