    Default old basement mystery

in my 1917 home there is @4'(diameter) circle in the concrete floor. the concrete matches the rest of the floor but the circle outline is obvious and there is a quarter size hole in one place on the circumference. It looks like there's dampness around the area. Any ideas?

The old gravity furnace AKA "octopus" probably sat there for a few generations.

ty for the reply. the only problem with that theory is that the area in question is very close(inches) to a wooden wall/staircase, 20 feet from the old coal chute, and no ductwork in the area.

sounds like an old, quite possibly, gravity feed furnace to me. the small hole might have been for an oil line when the furnace was converted from coal to gas. regarding the location being near a wooden wall or staircase makes perfect sense. there were no building codes back then like there are today. it was placed in the most convenient location to run the ductwork. coal shutes or coal rooms were rarely right next to the furnace, they were always against an outside wall.
