Default Install beadboard directly to studs?

Can I put beadboard directly on wall studs or do I have to put up drywall first?

    Thanks!

Are you installing panels or individual boards --- vertical or horizontal?

typcially you have to have drywall for fire code reasons. the board has to be in place to slow down the transer of smoke from room to room, if you do install it to the studs you will need to instlal blocking 16" o.c in every stud spacing so to have somethign to fasten to

Thanks for the replies. This would be panels installed vertically in a basement. Studs are in front of a cement wall and will have fiberglass batt insulation. I was thinking it would save some work & expense, but drywall first sounds like the way to go.

if you do hang drywall first you dont have to go to a full 3 coats of mud. simply us the first bond coat to seal the joints for drafts and stopping smoke from getting through in the event of a fire
