    Default Back Yard/No Sun/Dirt/Two Dogs - Help!

We have been searching for a solution to our backyard. We get very little sun because of trees - removing them is not an option because they are not on our property, we've trimmed but still do not get much sun. Our yard is currently dirt and lots of it! We are planning on installing a patio this spring/summer to help with some of the dirt. We are thinking of putting down wood chips or something like this since grass will not grow. We have two very active labrador dogs. We've looking into "turf" and "artifical grass" all which are great options, however they are both very expensive and only last 7-10 years. Any suggestions on a cover for the remainder of our "dirt" yard? Thank you.

If you want a beautiful yard, that would require keeping the dogs off of it as a general rule. Dogs are hard on grass, from digging to wear trails, to constant trampling in a delicate environment. To achieve this you'd have to create a dog run area to keep the dogs from day to day and only let them on the yard periodically for short periods of time.

Without grass, you could easily landscape with shrubbery then mulch with chips or bark. What kinds of surfaces do you find at the local dog parks?

What are your neighbors doing for large, shaded areas, like the one you have? See what works for them.
