    You should look into whether the contractor will provide a free estimate. There are a lot of contractors out there that will give a free, initial appraisal, in order to get an idea of the scope of the project. If they provide this, you can also get an idea of the price and whether the project will necessitate the services of an architect.

    I found a couple of sites where you can find good contractors and get reviews. This seems to be the best: Angie's List. Only downside is, you have to pay for membership.
