    Default backsplash

When installing new kitchen cabinets, does one apply the tile to the backsplash before installing the cabinets? or after the cabinets are in place?

Tile after the cabinets and counter are in place. Be sure to leave a 1/8" gap between the tile and the counter, the tile and the walls, the tile and the cabinets, the tile and any wood trim.... you get the idea.

Like Houston said, and the reason fot it is: If you mount the cabinets after the tile, they will be the width of the backsplash away from the wall.
