Default Roofing on 1820 Greek Revival

What do you think the roofing was originally?

If you were on a reasonable budget (and didn't like architectural style shingles) what would you use?

If you want to take a look, Bing Maps it at 69 Fair Street, Warwick, RI.

Most likely the original roof was slate. You can go with slate or a few other products that look like slate.

Thank you! I'm sure there are tons of threads here on it, but do you have any personal recommendations for synthetic slate? Real slate is above my budget. Heard debatable things about the synthetic stuff.
