Question how to paint previously painted cedar siging

portland, oregon--recently purchased older ranch style home with cedar siding that was painted with board ends painted together, so siding starting to buckle in some places. Want to paint different color. Do we need to first break paint to release board ends or re-paint and then remove paint. What is best way to do this?

Greetings from a fellow Portlander. I am not sure I understand your question. Do you feel that because the siding boards are tightly butted together , that they are warping? They are commonly joined together in such a fashion, albeit, in a real good job, they are beveled to lap over one another to better fend off rain. In an ideal world, the cut ends would have been primed before being snugged up together. If you have badly warped siding boards, your best bet would probably be to replace those boards.
