Default Giant holes through exterior plywood sheathing

Hey, I got a house from the late 50s. In the bathroom, the builder cut two sets of 3" holes between each stud in the sheathing (1 high, and 1 low). I was wondering why this was done. The sheathing is rotten and I am replacing it. Do I need to put these holes back in? Should I take any other measure to solidify this bathroom while the walls are down? Thanks!

Possibly for the installation of blown rock wool or cellulose insulation?

I wouldn't worry about the holes, just replace the sheathing and siding and you'll be fine.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
