Default Mounting an exterior lamp to a cinder block wall

Are there other ways to mount an exterior lamp to a cinder block wall other than:
    a) chiseling out the cinder block and mortoring a box into the hole
    b) surface mounting the box and spacing the lamp bezel away from the wall with a wood plaque

A "fixture pan" is an electrical box that is about 1/2" deep and will fit under the canopy of most light fixtures without spacing.

There was a recent episode of Ask This Old House that dealt with a similar issue in a brick wall, though they did chisel out the brick. Watch it 0nline, it may help you out.

Thanks, I appreciate the help & will watch that TOH episode. If I can fit the box under the lamp bezel it sure will save some steps.
