Cedar Shake Siding
We have a 62 year old 1 storey house sided with original (mostly) raked cedar shingles. They have been stained with SherwinWilliams opaque stains for at least the past 25 years. It is holding up pretty well, although it's thick along the edges and starting to crack in places. I would like to strip it off and restain a darker color. It is a light beige now. I was warned not to powerwash it, and with the "raking' I can't see using a flat paintsc****r. I'm concerned about the mess and danger of a chemical stripper. There are two layers of shingles, and the underlayment is a type of gypsum board used after the war, not plywood. Any suggestions on removing enough of the loosening stain to be able to re-do the house? RE-siding is not an option, and we really love the old shingles.
