    Default 6x6 post

I have a 6x6 post that is supporting a deck and the 16 x16 shelter when I notch out for the 2x10 does that compromise the support value of the 6x6 to hold the roof help

Not sure what you're asking. Can you re-phrase your question with a better description of the situation?

I see what you want to do now.

What jkirk says will work, but notch no more than 1-1/2" off the posts.

I'd do it differently: use a 4x10 on top of the posts, with bolted Simpson connectors.

Yep -- just like Mr. Kirk said -- I would also use construction adhesive.
A *let in * connection like this is very strong. The 2x10 simply fills in the material you removed ( pretty much considered a squash block ).
