    Default white smoke oily smell

My boiler is off and the oil tank is empty but the hot water tank is working and connected to the chimney, but I noticed a small light gray smoke that smells oily . Is there a problem with my chimney and hot water tank ??

You say the hot water tank is connected to the chimney---is the HW tank an oil-fired unit???

If it is, it may be in need of servicing & is putting out an oily exhaust residue due to a mis-adjusted burner, etc.

Have you called your serviceman to come over to look at it yet???

If you don't have someone work on it now the chimney will get clogged with soot & you'll have to pay a chimney cleaner a lot of $$$$.
