    Default Attic Air Flow

My 1978 saltbox has always suffered from ice dams on the back, smaller roof. I have added a total of 24 inches of fiberglass in the attic, sealed around lights and the whole house fan, and even the attic pull-down entrance. I have had to resort to installing passive gable end vents and using heat cables on the rook with limited success. Is it possible that the pitch of this roof is so shallow that whatever heat is in the air rises through the full-length soffit and can't escape through the ridge vent?

no.. convection will cause the air to leave through the ridge vent.

im guessing you dont have thru vents in the eaves so you can get air flow up though the soffit
fire up the saw and make some dust
