    Smile Vent on garage gables

My garage has no venting.I was considering putting vents on each side of the gables. Is it necessary and if so how should go about it.

I am assuming you are talking about a free standing garage. Vents would certainly help make the garage more comfortable for you by reducing the heat build-up under the roof. This will also help lengthen the life of your shingles on the roof.

In terms of personal comfort, a ceiling in the garage and insulation above it will greatly increase your comfort too.

The vents should be mounted close to the highest point of the gable. Eave vents would also increase the air flow, allowing air to rise through natural convection currents and exit out the gable vents.

Take a look at a ridge vent. Another (and less attractive) option is turbine vents.
