That would be my guess as well, and Houston's suggestion of installing a border would be the easiest and most cost effective way to fix the problem. I would recommend a much lighter or darker color than the existing floor so that the contrast is both complimentary and significant, that way it looks like it was done that way on purpose, rather than being a patch-in or mismatched repair.
