    You may be thinking of the rule of thumb about load bearing
    walls being offset no more than the depth of the joist.

    Actually the length of a cantilever could vary according to the size of the joists (2x6, 2x8, etc), their length, their connection to the header and the location of the posts.

    I've seen cantilevers extend more than 16" beyond the beam/posts... and they are still standing.

    this isnt rule of thumb here, im quoting code. inspectors here will fail a deck if not done this way
    fire up the saw and make some dust

    simple and inexpensive solution, some pressure treated trellis with small, close squares
