Friday night, no a/c. Air handler fan running, compressor fan running. No idea if actual compressor was running. Tech came out, went straight to the capacitor (?) and replaced it. $75.00 labor, $108.00 parts. Everything ok. Saturday night, 24 hours later, again no a/c. Same tech, hosed out the compressor unit to clean, added 2 lbs gas, said coil in the air handler had leaks and must be replaced. Charged $93.00 for Freon, $67.00 for leak search, and $67.00 for half hour labor. Estimates new coil at about $1,200.00. Does this sound right for Southwest Florida? Any other options? Thanks.
Unit is a 7 year old Goodman, a low end builders model. Tech recommends replacing the whole system for about $6 - $7 thousand. Ouch!
