Default Outdoor faucet leaks with back pressure

I have a a faucet with a water timer attached to water some plants once a day for a few minutes. When the faucet is off there is no leak but when I turn the faucet on with the timer off then the faucet leaks just below the handle. Even turning the handle just slightly causes a drip if the timer is off.
What should I do to fix the problem?

Depending on the faucet there should be a packing nut just below the handle, try to tighten it, this may solve you problem.
