Default simple question from a total rookie: What is CBU?

Trying to read all your helpful posts folks, but I can't figure out what CBU is. The way some people use it I thought it was cement board, but the way otherpeople use, it, that can't be right.

It depends on the context of the sentence.

But if you've seen it mentioned in relation to cement, it could be: CEMENT BOARD UNDERLAYMENT, referring to moisture barrier.

You can also do a quick google search for common abbreviations and find different uses for CBU.

also cement(itious) backer unit which includes all cement based backer boards used for tile work. The term was delveloped to include Hardie boards into the same catagory as Wedi, durock, permabase and anything new that comes along. The CBU term differentiates it from foam core boards such as Kerdi-board and a few others which are used for tile underlayments / backing.
