    Default water not always hot

We have a 100 year old farm house that we bought 31 years ago. We have always had really hot water. The last few year in order to get hot water in the shower, I have had to turn the bath tub faucet on cold to hot until there is a clunking sound and I get the hot water. Then I can get hot water in the shower. If I don't do this the water is just warm. What is causing this?

Sounds like the hot & cold water is combined in a dual-control faucet that's shot.

    Can you post any photos???

What type faucet do you have? Is it a single lever or two handles?
It sounds like a two handle with a loose washer.

All the fausets in the house are single handle. We have to turn the water back and forth from cold to hot until we hear the clunk at all the fausets in the house to get the really hot water. The shower is the only one that I have to get the hot water at a different fauset before I can get hot water there. Sometimes if I get the hot water there it will not stay hot.

It looks like new faucets or bodies (inside the walls) will solve your problems.

I agree. it's sounds as though new mixing valves are needed.
