    Default rust on hinges

We live in a 25+ y.o. house, which we bought about 2 yrs. ago. We replaced the original HVAC with all new HVAC 1 1/2 yrs. ago. While doing some interior painting recently, I noticed that most of the upper hinges on the interior doors have rust spots. What might have caused this?

I can't guess why they have rust spots. Has there been a time when the house has been closed up and without heat? The rust could have happened at that time.

You could replace the hinges with solid brass instead of plated steel. That would prevent rust (and they'd probably look better).
