## How do you estimate how many yards of mulch you need?

My family and I moved last year from a house where we have a yard about the size of a postage stamp to about 1.5 arces of land. Some of it is landscaped. What is a good esimate for how much coverage you will get from a yard of mulch?

You can do it several ways, calculate the rough cubic footage you need which will be the most accurate (Length x Width x Depth ), or Google "mulch coverage calculator" and use one of the many on-line calculators.

Mulch depth is usually about 4 inches, I personally go thicker than that to allow for settling so that my finished, settled depth is 3 to 4 inches.

Other tips:
- While it won't affect your quantity calculation, it is important to always leave several inches of space between mulch and trees and shrubs. Covering their trunks can cause death and disease to the plant.
- Leave at least 4 inches of space between the mulch and the siding on your home, this is to prevent pest and rot intrusion.
- For weed control, either install weed cloth OR use pre-emergent granuals under the mulch.

Take the lenght in feet X Feet in width X inches you select for depth and Divide by 324 will give you cubic yards.

If its the first layer of mulch over bare dirt, you're looking at 4" thick, or 81 square feet per yard. If you're doing an overlay on old mulch, you can cut that in half to 2" thick or 162 square feet per yard.
