Re: How do you estimate how many yards of mulch you need?
You can do it several ways, calculate the rough cubic footage you need which will be the most accurate (Length x Width x Depth ), or Google "mulch coverage calculator" and use one of the many on-line calculators.
Mulch depth is usually about 4 inches, I personally go thicker than that to allow for settling so that my finished, settled depth is 3 to 4 inches.
- While it won't affect your quantity calculation, it is important to always leave several inches of space between mulch and trees and shrubs. Covering their trunks can cause death and disease to the plant.
- Leave at least 4 inches of space between the mulch and the siding on your home, this is to prevent pest and rot intrusion.
- For weed control, either install weed cloth OR use pre-emergent granuals under the mulch.
