minwax makes a wood epoxy that you can use to fill the roten area. you just have to sc**** it down to solid bare wood before you use it. put it on a little thinker than the wood then sand it down to match. it will be stronger and last longer than the wood and it can be painted after.

    A 10yr.-old Victorian?! j/k!

Yes, definitely remove all "soft" material.
    Then the important part...
Make sure you use a "Wood-Petrifier" b4 the Epoxy-filler goes on.
It's a separate product that hardens-off the wood to eliminate further deterioration.

Painted 3 times in 10 yrs.?!??!
    * That seems a little more frequent than it should be.
    * What part of door is affected?
    * What kinds of prep and paint have been used?! (EXACTLY)
    * What side of house is it?
    * Direct SUN/weather-exposure, or sheltered by a porch?

The wood door is exposed to the elements, not covered by a porch. I used exterior Para Paint...best they sell. It's on the east side of the house, and I sand it smooth before painting.

Epoxy products will work to do repairs. I have to ask, when you paint the door do you do all 6 sides especially the bottom?

Google "Git Rot". The product is great for wood boats..

I concur with the Minwax wood hardener and epoxy repair - I've used it on rotted windowsill and trim with great results.

If the deterioration is in a trim or otherwise distinct area of the door, purchasing a new component part may also be a good option. Using a non-wood product isn't 'genuine', but it won't rot, either!
