    Default sealed up fireplace

I have an 1853 house with 7 fireplaces. The one in the bedroom looks like it was sealed with plaster. It was painted with a latex paint and recently it bubbled up and started to flake off. I've sc****d most of it away, but now I don't know what to paint it with. Do I need to use an oil based primer?

The most likely cause of your problem is rain coming down the chimney. Moisture from the back side causes the paint to bubble and peal. The first thing to do is cap the unused chimney, let it dry well, and seal with an oil based primmer.
