    Default Deck on Balcony

Are there any special considerations when building a deck on a balcony with rolled roofing? Deck will be approx 9.5' x9.5' on top of a small addition. Keep all the weight on the perimeter,or put small piers under the structure to rest on larger platforms about 2 feet in distributing the weight more evenly on the roof? All help appreciated. Thanks!!

You'll want to make sure the roof is in excellent shape before covering it over. You don't want a short lived roof covered where you can't see the deterioration happening.

Orient your supports as not to collect debris and cause the roof to fail prematurely. Keeping an eye on drainage is critical. If at all possible, make the deck in interlocking sections that can be lifted for maintenance underneath. You know someone is going to drop something valuable between the deck boards when you're showing it off during that first party.

Legs / posts/ piers are not as desirable as spreading the load out over the longest spans possible.

Attaching a railing is a challenge as you don't have the traditional legs for support.

Thanks for the tips, I wouldn't have considered the debris angle. The roof is only three years old and in good shape. Spread the load is the way to go then. Thanks again.
