Question Help! 70's fireplace needs some TLC!!!

I just bought my first home and the fireplace in the living room is straight 70's patchwork sandstone with a copper looking insert. I like traditional wood mantels. I do not have a lot of spare cash to hire someone so I thought I could do it myself. I have heard about mantel kits. My question is can I just attach one over the sandstone or do I have to rip that out and attach it all to the wall?

That's hard to answer without seeing what you have but generally, yes, you can attach a fireplace surround to a stone fire place. It generally takes some time and patience to scribe the unit to the rough surface, plus attaching can be a challenge.

Oh and one other thing, it will be necessary to maintain proper fire code clearances.
