How do I remove or disable an old tub drain mechanism?
I've read a bunch of posts on the web that talk about a plate and screws. Not my tub.....
A little background, the house; c.1871, the tub; the one that was originally added 20 years or so after the house was built. (When indoor plumbing became the fashion). It has the white porcelain cross handles, "HOT", "WASTE" & "COLD" on the side wall, while the spout is on the "front". There is no overflow.
It is this "WASTE" handle which is causing the issue. It has been disabled previously, however, it somehow manages to close itsef off, maybe it's pressure, maybe vibration, you tell me....
Anyway, I want to at least open it further so the tub will drain quickly. We have an access panel in the adjacent room and think we know what has to happen, can't get the pipe apart. It seems like it should be able to be pushed open from inside the drain; it doesn't work either (we're probably pushing it shut would be my guess.) Any ideas?
