    Default Sump pump

I just had my sump pump replaced. Near the bottom of the discharge pipe is a tiny hole which is shooting out water as the pump is dischaging the water out of the pit. I did not notice this type of hole on my last discharge pipe. Does this hole serve a purpose and does the plumber need to come back out and correct?

At least some sump pump manufacturers require that small hole be drilled into the pipe so the area between the check valve (this keeps the water in the vertical pipe from all draining back into your sump hole) and the base of the pump empty of water. This way when the pump starts it has a chance to "get up to speed" by pushing the water through this small empty space before it comes in contact with the water at the check valve.
