new doorknobs for old backplates
We live in a 1905 pre-craftsman farmhouse-y little place, not terribly distinctive, but has some of the original features and we're pretty happy with it . We have the original solid-wood five-panel interior doors which are in salvageable shape. All the doors have the original backplates which are these great sort-of art nouveau embossed things. Unfortunately, the original knobs and mortise-style locks are badly damaged or outright missing.
My greatest wish would be to get new knobs (with more modern style push button or push pin locks, not mortise) that have a narrow enough post to still be used with the original backplates... and to NOT have to spend a fortune. I really can't justify spending $200 per door with our budget.
If anyone has any leads, tips or ideas, I would be very grateful!
