Question mildew on wall next to tub pipes

I noticed that there's what appears to be mildew on the wall of a closet in my home. The room is adjacent to the bathroom and I believe the tub plumbing in opposite the wall in question. What could be the cause of this problem, how do I determine what the problem is and what should be done to eleiminate the cause of the problem and get rid of the mildew on the wall?

Sounds like you have water leaking from the bathroom side, perhaps this where the tub is. It may be water getting in behind whatever covers the walls during showering or you may have leaking plumbing.
You might have to cut open that part of the closet to see what's going on. Also to get rid of the mold or mildew that's already infested the wall material. This may also help you fix the drain stopper if this area is behind the tub.
