Default How could a neighborhood use Twitter for crime/safety alerts and prevention

Looking for specific examples on how neighbors could use a service like Twitter to improve safety/security? For example, send a Tweet if a suspicious person is spotted along with location, etc. Other examples?

in my town the next subdivision over set up a private group on facebook for just such a thing. they post anything thats happend such as vandalism or breakins.

just set up a group then set it to private then invite people in your neighborhood, its the only way people can join
fire up the saw and make some dust

If you can wait for Google+, I bet that would be a better solution. Having a "neighborhood" circle to communicate would be easier to keep up with I feel.
