    Default Patio Deck Problem

I have a large patio deck off the back of my house. There is one problem. There is a large square cut out of it to allow for natural light to get into the basement. I am constantly worried that when we have guests over that someone will fall in that hole. Can you please offer some advice. Thank you.

how about making a removable hatch that matches the decking. you can leave it in place unless you want light down below. how big of an opening are you talking about?

You might want to consider a thick Lexan and build it in like a fixed window. Lexan is hard to scratch, that is why it is used for vandal resistant windows. You would need to find out from the manufacturer the suggested thickness to meet your needs. This will give you the light you need and prevent someone from falling.

you could use any of the available transparent or transluscent materials available, from glass (make it like a skylight) or plexiglass, glass block, etc. or, if the hole is very large, you can put railings around it, making it like a double tall space from your basement. i would recommend an aluminum railing system such as easyrailings.com that is cost effective, strong, durable, and looks good (which is important when you are entertaining).
