Stucco on flaking basement brick?
Our house is ~120 years old and has basement walls of fieldstone and brick. The brick has some moderate spalling and serious flaking. We would occasionally get some seepage and maybe a 1/2 inch of water in one corner during record-breaking rains, but no worse than that.
We'd like to finish the basement or at least make it usable.
We've begun work with a mason/basement expert, and the first thing he did was to sc**** the flaking brick in the bad corner and stucco in that whole corner, floor to ceiling. He also dug a drainage ditch around the perimeter in that corner.
Now, we're thinking it might be good to just do that same treatment around the whole basement (not sure we need the ditch all around though), to prevent further degradation of the brick. Can anybody think of reasons why this is or is not a good idea? I would be fine with the corner result around the whole basement, I'm just worried that I'm missing something, even though the mason guy has been forthright and flexible and his team was very professional with the first job.
Thanks in advance!
