    Does notching hemlock beams to secure to the walls affect structural integrity of the beam?

    Any notching affects the structural integrity of a beam. That being said location, depth, and width of notch will determine how much.

    For our renovation, the inspector required that we replace all notched beams. This one is particularly nasty. http://www.renoyourlife.com/wp-conte...olition-17.jpg

    The inspector said a hole in the middle of the beam was the only option...
